If you’ve been researching European train travel, you might notice a big update to a familiar name. Eurail has officially merged into Interrail, uniting all international travelers under one global banner.
While the name on your mobile app ticket might look different now, the magic of watching the European countryside roll past your train window remains exactly the same. Here is what this change means for your trip and how to make the most of your pass.
How an Interrail Pass Unlocks European Rail Travel
Traveling in Europe by train is definitely worth getting an Interrail pass. From my experience, nothing beats the relaxing, windowside pace of heading to and from cities, into the countryside or another country by rail.
An Interrail pass provides an all-in-one solution. I tested the pass (then known as Eurail) for a Christmas market adventure through Germany, Switzerland and Austria. I went from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg, then to Basel and Innsbruck and ended in Vienna, taking trains everywhere, including airports.
An Interrail pass works well depending upon:
- What your travel plans are like and your flexibility with them.
- Whether you could opt to take a train at a time that suits you or want to see as many European destinations by rail as you can.
What Is an Interrail Pass?
Interrail is a rail pass system that’s like a golden train ticket. This service provides unlimited access to participating rail service networks over 33 European countries (said to number more than 30,000 destinations).
Following the September 2026 update, both European residents and overseas travelers now use the single Interrail system.
Many European destinations have rail systems that intertwine and link to each other; an Interrail pass connects to most of them. Based on your type of pass, you can get on an unlimited number of trains each travel day.
How Do I Get an Interrail Pass?
You can purchase an Interrail pass via its website before leaving for your trip. First, you can see pricing and types of passes available and decide which pass is best for your plans. See this guide as a help.
While you can request a printed version of an Interrail pass, I went with a mobile version that I could use through the Rail Planner Mobile app. I recommend this digital method as it prevents the risk of losing a paper pass, especially while en route.
The app also provides up-to-date train information and helps to better manage your schedule.
Which Interrail Pass Should I Get?
Interrail passes come in different pricing levels and vary based on which country and how many countries you’ll be traveling in. They also range across a certain number of days or months.
Eurail has two main types of rail passes:
- One Country Pass involves Flexi Passes, whose number of days per month depends on the country.
- Global Pass is for use in multiple countries. You decide on how many days you’ll use trains and choose between Flexi or Continuous Passes.
- An Interrail Plus Pass in beta is another option.
The Global Pass’ Flexi Pass let me catch an earlier train from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg, then follow a set schedule to Basel and Innsbruck and Vienna, but I could choose my own train time to Vienna International Airport.
Is Interrail Good For Families?
While I often travel solo or with friends or colleagues, I can say that Interrail can also be good for families and seniors with flexible travel plans. And – bonus – travelers 60+ receive a 10% discount on standard adult passes.
There’s special pricing for younger travelers. Interrail’s Youth category (ages 12-27) can get a 25% discount with an Interrail Youth Pass. Kids under 12 travel free with an adult, getting up to two free Child Passes per adult.
Can You Go On Any Train With an Interrail Pass?
You can use your Interrail pass on most local and national railways and high-speed services, plus some ferries, as long as they’re on this list.
Remember that your Eurail pass is activated on the first day of the trip; you use the pass within its timeframe. If you’re unsure what counts as a train travel day, this webpage says it generally means from midnight to 11:59 pm on the same calendar day.
By using the Rail Planner Mobile app, you can look up train times and see what trains are next and available.
What Is Not Covered In an Interrail Pass?
When buying a Interrail pass, you must choose between first and second class passenger levels. Decide which format is good for you by looking at what amenities are included and what aren’t.
You have to pay an extra fee for seat reservations, which can be done via Interrail’s website when buying your pass. The new Interrail Plus Pass seems to include this cost but carefully weigh your options beforehand.
If you’re heading to a major European city like Paris or traveling during major holidays, it’s important to make seat reservations because trains can get crowded. As with a flight, it might be tricky to sit with your travel buddies if your train seats aren’t already reserved.
Also, meal service might not be available on all European trains. Check the station’s train timetable to see if yours has a restaurant or buffet car.
How Difficult Is It To Use an Interrail Pass?
Activating your Interrail pass is easy but make sure you do it online before boarding your first train. Add your ID/passport number for verification and then choose your first travel date.
Once that’s done, the first day of your trip is officially marked. When using a train day on your pass, you press a toggle that turns that listing “on.” It’s then marked as used, so make sure that’s what you want.
An activated Interrail pass comes up as a QR code, which you show to the onboard conductor or scan to enter an automated gate.
Also with the Rail Planner Mobile app, you can map out your route by searching through train schedules and then saving them to the app’s My Trip feature. My pass also alerted me to a delay with one train and its subsequent track departure change, so I could adjust my plans accordingly.
Should I Buy an Interrail Pass?
If you want to see much of one country or multiple destinations, and have wiggle room with your schedule and budget, give an Interrail pass a try.
With my pass, branded as Eurail at the time, I incorporated one to two overnight stays in my itinerary. In between seeing Christmas markets, I wandered around Heidelberg Castle, took a street art tour in Basel, reached the Top of Innsbruck and dined in coffeehouses in Vienna.
Overall, I think Interrail helps you get to and from destinations at your own pace, if your schedule permits it.
